The Boston Red Sox have three talented prospects close to making their major league debuts, but it looks like they could soon get a fourth, and he’s being compared to MLB home run king Barry Bonds.

Despite a slow start to the season, the Red Sox enter MLB play today in the thick of the Wild Card race. They play in the same division as two of baseball’s best teams, but that hasn’t stopped them from being competitive and playing better than some MLB experts expected.

Adding to that hope of returning to a consistently competitive club is the fact that the Red Sox currently have three promising prospects in Triple-A. Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel are the three best players in the team’s farm system, according to MLB.com. In addition, Mayer and Anthony are considered the 10 best in the entire sport.

But there is a player one level below who has the potential to be the best and who is already one of the top five in his system. In a conversation this week with Boston.comAnthony heaped praise on his young talent Kristian Campbell and compared him to one of the best players in MLB history.

“We call him Barry Bonds because he’s such a good hitter,” Anthony said of his former minor league teammate. “He’s a great player. He’s an exceptional athlete. Plays the game the right way and is a great person on and off the field.”

“It’s rare that you get a player like him who can play in so many different premium positions, play at his level and deliver the numbers he did.”

Statistics for Kristian Campbell (Double-A): .367 average, .473 OBP, .588 SLG, 1.061 OPS, 8 HR, 25 RBI, 29 R, 3 SB

Campbell can play multiple positions in the infield and outfield, but what makes his potential so exciting is that after playing well in the Rookie League and Single-A last year, the 22-year-old has gotten even better in Double-A. Usually, things go downhill a bit when you move up to a higher league, but that wasn’t the case for the former Georgia Tech star.

His numbers have been consistently up for the Portland Sea Dogs, he was a monster in June and he has shown power and speed for the Boston Red Sox’s Double-A team. If he continues like this, it’s only a matter of time before he joins the “Big Three” in Triple-A.
