Well-known PTOs; the Penguins’ path is ahead

The Pittsburgh Penguins don’t have much roster space for big names looking to jumpstart their NHL careers, but a few notable PTOs have signed up for their training camp tryouts, including one with the Washington Capitals. New Penguins forward Cody Glass responded to a critical Instagram post and we detailed the turbulent road ahead for the Penguins. The Edmonton Oilers are still working their way through the RFA offer sheets but could have a chance at revenge. Matt Rempe is the center of attention as Milan Lucic tries to get back into the NHL.

Vacation? Which vacation?

It’s been a turbulent week for the Penguins, and it certainly gave us plenty to talk about. The breaking news cut short my little tour of Northern Pennsylvania. For any aspiring sociologist, it’s a fertile field of study why some small towns continue to thrive. In contrast, others with the same resources constantly struggle or disappear from the map.

If you are taking a last minute trip before school or heading north next month to see the foliage, I had a fantastic beef on weck at a little cafe in Mt. Jewett. The little town is Coffee Sol. Mt. Jewett is just one block down Route 6, so you can’t miss it, and it’s only a few miles from the Kinzua Bridge. The BEST beef on weck I’ve ever had. The salted bun is amazing.

And what many of you probably don’t know: The St. Louis Arch was made in Warren, Pennsylvania (and now the trip counts as a business trip!)

I think we need to do a Penguins video chat soon, right?

PHN+: OK, let’s get to the point. It’s been a summer full of picks, but also the struggling, well-paid players that came with those picks. There will be no soft middle for the Penguins this season, no. Here’s what’s next for the Penguins.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: The minor league report has some good news. Nick Yorke is still hitting the ball and has done so AGAIN. Here’s the latest on the Pirates’ prospects.

The big hitter that the Pirates signed at the MLB trade deadline is not doing so well. If he were a continent, he would be Antarctica. John Perrotta has the latest news on Bryan De La Cruz.

Steelers Now: Andy Weidl has been a godsend and a big reason for the Steelers’ recent draft success. He laid it out yesterday, and here’s what to expect from future Steelers drafts.

The joint practice was uneventful, but there is one thing you can keep in mind: Watch out for the Steelers’ running game.

NHL transfer talks, news and National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: A Patrik Laine trade? Not so fast. The Columbus Blue Jackets are taking a clear line and won’t just give him away to the highest bidder if the bids are bad. Columbus wants value in return.

Bleacher Report Podcast: Tony DeAngelo admitted to being responsible for the infamous fight with Rangers goalie Aleksander Georgiev that earned DeAngelo a bad reputation and a one-way ticket out of New York. He spared neither the details nor hide from it.

Washington Hockey Now: The PTO signing of the summer. A real hit. Jakub Vrana will try his luck and do another tryout with the Washington Capitals.

I actually like everything Washington did this summer except PLD, but even that move has a real chance of being successful.

TSN: Former first-round pick Logan Brown is trying to get his NHL career back on track and has secured a paid contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Brown is recovering from hip surgery, so this could be a bargain, too.

Boston Hockey Now: Milan Lucic was sent packing after a nasty domestic violence charge. That’s been resolved, and Lucic is skating in New Jersey in hopes of a return. What’s next for Milan Lucic?

NHL.com: This is not good news for the Metro Division. Reading between the lines, Matt Rempe feels the attention and feels the need to earn it.
