The Brewers catch up in the 8th inning, beat the Dodgers 6-4 and reach a tie in the series in the duel of the division leaders

MILWAUKEE– Jackson Chourio and Wiliam Contreras hit a home run in the first inning and scored again in an eighth-inning comeback as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to a 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

Devin Williams made his third save in as many opportunities, finishing the game by taking out Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani. That save came a day after Williams secured a 5-4 victory by taking out Ohtani, Betts and Freddie Freeman in succession.

By winning both games, the Brewers secured a tie in the four-game series between the division leaders.

The Brewers trailed 4-3 when they loaded the bases to start the eighth inning: Chourio hit a double, Garrett Mitchell walked and Contreras hit an infield single that bounced off the left leg of reliever Daniel Hudson (6-2).

Willy Adames’ single to left brought Chourio home with the tying run. Dodgers third baseman Kiké Hernández then dove to left to catch a ground ball from Tyler Black, but didn’t have enough time to throw it to the base.

Hernández threw to first base instead when Mitchell scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice. Contreras scored another run from third base when Rhys Hoskins grounded out on a batted ball that also hit Hudson’s leg.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, the Dodgers rallied to take a 4-3 lead when Hernández greeted Elvis Peguero with a crucial two-out single in the sixth inning.

Milwaukee took an early lead when Los Angeles’ Jack Flaherty allowed home runs to two of the first four batters he faced.

After Brice Turang hit a double to lead off the first inning home run, Chourio hit a 420-footer to left-center field for his 15th home run of the season. The 20-year-old rookie also has 16 steals.

According to MLB.com, Andruw Jones, Adrian Beltre, Bryce Harper, Ken Griffey Jr. and Phil Cavaretta are the only younger players to ever have seasons with at least 15 home runs and 15 steals.

One out later, Contreras hit a 417-footer into the second row of left-field seats for his third home run of the season.

But after Contreras’ home run, Flaherty didn’t allow another hit until Turang hit a two-out single in the fifth inning. The Brewers didn’t score again until their comeback in the eighth inning.

Brewers starter Tobias Myers allowed four runs, two earned, and gave up eight hits and a walk while recording one strikeout in 5 2/3 innings, ending a streak of three consecutive starts in which the rookie right-hander allowed no more than one run.

Bryan Hudson (5-1) earned the win by going two scoreless innings as a relief pitcher.
