Pole winner Daniel Suarez from Richmond begs NASCAR to expand rule change

Richmond pole winner Daniel Suarez has asked NASCAR to expand the rule changes regarding the option tire.

Before the Cup Series event at Richmond Raceway, NASCAR officials announced that teams would have two Goodyear tires to choose from.

A softer “option” tire offered drivers short-term grip but faded much faster, while a longer-lasting “prime” tire offered less grip.

This tire selection was first tested at the All-Star Race, but did not produce the expected results, which led to the changes being tested at Richmond.

One rider who particularly benefited from this rule change was Daniel Suarez, who won the second stage and finished the weekend in P10.

Suarez was one of the first to switch to the softer tyre, which earned him a playoff point through a clever strategy

“It was fun, man,” Suarez said.

“I give a lot of credit to NASCAR and Goodyear for introducing this option tire because it’s a lot of fun. I don’t understand why we don’t have an option tire everywhere we go.”

“If you find anyone here at the racetrack who didn’t like the race, bring them here,” he added.

“Because I don’t think you can find one person. It’s just more fun, you know? You bring more strategy, more overtaking. It’s fun. As a racing driver, for the team, for the fans, for the (media), it’s a good thing.”

“It was like Mario Kart with a star.

“I guarantee you I had more fun than anyone else.”
