Virginia Union University just got a major upgrade thanks to NASCAR driver Rajah Caruth and tech giant Microsoft. On August 9, during NASCAR race weekend, Caruth rolled into the Claude G. Perkins Living and Learning Center with a state-of-the-art driving simulator in tow, ready to kick VUU’s educational resources into high gear.

Officially unveiled during a press conference, the simulator is more than just a flashy piece of technology – it’s a game-changer for VUU students. This dynamic tool gives them hands-on experience with cutting-edge automotive technology and engineering, and offers a sneak peek into the fast-paced world of motorsport.

“The collaboration with Microsoft was an absolute highlight,” said Caruth, who is making waves in the NASCAR Truck Series. “This simulator is close to my heart – it’s how I started my racing career. Now I’m really excited that the VUU students have the chance to immerse themselves in the world of motorsport, just like I did.”

Caruth was in town to compete in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Richmond Raceway. He finished 17th in the race and is fifth in the national standings among point-eligible drivers.

“The thing about racing is that it’s so equal compared to other sports… All that matters is how much work you put in and how good a driver you are… It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from,” said Caruth, a senior at Winston-Salem State University.

As part of the partnership, 15 lucky VUU students attended the NASCAR race weekend on August 10 and received exclusive access to the garage and pit areas. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the exciting behind-the-scenes action of professional racing.

“This simulator is not just another addition to our campus – it is a bold step forward,” said Hakim J. Lucas, President and CEO of VUU.

“This groundbreaking tool will greatly enhance the learning experience for our students.”

Lucas stressed that the high-tech donation is part of VUU’s broader strategy to push the boundaries in education and technology and provide students with the skills they need to succeed in today’s fast-paced world.
