Hockey League Fraud, PTO Season

A few months ago, there were rumors of a billionaire-funded 3-on-3 league poaching NHL players. Many were skeptical that such a thing would happen, and with good reason. On Thursday, more evidence came to light that the entire league is a sham. I don’t think the NHL has to worry about this league anytime soon.

We start with the PTO season. Last summer, the Avalanche signed Joel Kiviranta to a PTO in late August, and this summer it’s already underway as the Capitals bring back someone who helped them win the Stanley Cup five years ago.

Every summer, NHL Network releases new rankings for the best players at every position. Last year, David Pastrnak was better than everyone else. This year, he’s below Mikko Rantanen. I’m not sure I agree…

Until tomorrow, NHN is running a flash sale where you can get a year’s subscription for only $10. No code needed, just a year’s subscription for $10. That’s less than $1 per month. This gives you access to CHN+ content, an ad-free experience, and the ability to read + content on any site in the network. This sale only runs until Saturday, so don’t miss out!

News and rumors

X: Major League Hockey has always seemed like a scam, and they do nothing to prove otherwise. Getting people to pay for a tryout in your league? Yes, that’s what scam artists do. It’s a shame, because a 3-on-3 league (in a smaller arena) would be entertaining to watch, but I don’t believe that for a second.

Washington Hockey Now: Jakub Vrana once scored 20 goals for the Washington Capitals in back-to-back seasons, helping them win the Stanley Cup. Since then, things haven’t been so easy for him and he spent a time participating in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. On Thursday, the Capitals announced they are bringing Jakub Vrana back on a paid leave of absence.

He’s only 28, which is crazy. This is definitely the kind of guy you sign for a paid vacation, not a contract.

TSN: George Parros is hiring his buddies as Ryan Getzlaf joins the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.

Boston Hockey Now: Due to his arrest for assault last year, he is currently ineligible to play in the NHL, but it appears Milan Lucic is looking to make a comeback.

Montreal Hockey Now: Avalanche fans aren’t the only ones dreaming of Sidney Crosby joining their team…

New Jersey Hockey Now: This list of the best wingers in the NHL? Yes, they forgot Jesper Bratt.
