Former Montreal Canadiens striker Steve Begin files for bankruptcy

Former Montreal Canadiens player Steve Bégin announced on Thursday that he is filing for bankruptcy.

The 46-year-old former hockey player confirmed the news in a Facebook post.

“The civil engineering company in which I was supposed to invest large sums of money since 2013 went bankrupt, which had a negative impact on my financial situation and subsequently led to bankruptcy. I could have tried to avoid the subject, but I decided to speak openly about it because I believe we can learn lessons from it,” he wrote.

“I find this experience very exhausting, disappointing and, above all, hurtful for myself and those close to me, but as always, despite this ordeal, I will continue and try to realize great projects,” he added.

Bégin played for the Habs from 2003 to 2009 and was a crowd favorite in Montreal because of his fiery, dynamic personality.

He scored 56 goals and 52 assists in 524 NHL games with the Calgary Flames, Canadiens, Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators.

Bégin was selected 40th overall by the Flames in the second round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He officially announced his retirement from the sport on January 16, 2014.
